TRAILS COMMITTEE IN ACTION 2017

December 9 - Greg and his son were able to clear a number of downed trees throughout the Rattlesnake property during the first snow storm of the season.
October 29 - Drew headed into Danforth and cleared a few downed trees and checked out the recently cleared trails at the top of Barret's Hill.
October 27 - Betsy Taylor-Kennedy and Gordon Taylor cleared downed trees and some invasive plants at the cellar hole near the Gould Parking Area for the Welch Pond Trails on Wattaquadock Hill
October 3rd - Gordon T cleared a small blow-down on the Basin Loop Trail in the Gould White area using a folding saw.
October 2nd - Larry and Gordon T started clearing brush on the Garrison House site at the junction of Sugar Road and Golden Run Road. Weeds were cut down and many were pulled up by the roots. Clearance of the weeds pile and completion of the project expected soon!
September 13th - Jeff L and Gordon cleared a large tree that fell into the loop trail in Annie Moore. Several other smaller obstructions were also resolved during the outing.
September 7th - Jeff L and Gordon walked from the new First Parish trail head out to the trail segment leading to Quail Run. Along the way, several trail obstructions and trail side / overhead hazards were cleared. The left turn intersection at junction "H" was better established.
August 13th - Keith and Jeff L worked in Vaughn Hills to clear multiple trail obstructions, overhead hazards, and a large fall down in the Moen parking area.
August 11th - Gordon and Jeff L worked in Fyfeshire to pull a 40' tree out of the upper pond using the recovery kit. They also cleared a massive obstruction in Gould-White off the Sawyer Road easement. Afterward, they opened the over grown route from the shared drive trail head at Randall-Vinger. There were two blow downs in Randall-Vinger also cleared.
July 30th - Gordon and Winslow work to clear multiple trail obstructions in Fyfeshire. One blow down was located just before the arched wooden "Button Bridge". Another massive tree was removed heading out of the conservation area toward West Berlin Road. The photos tell the story, this was one of the largest cleared this season!
July 20th - Working in collaboration with the Tom Denney Nature Camp's "Eco-Adventure" group, the Bolton Trails Committee builds two 16' composite deck bridges in Bowers Springs. A big thank you to Larry, Gordon, Jeff B, and the campers for making this project a reality.

July 16th - Working in collaboration with the adjacent land owner and the Conservation Department, the Bolton Trails Committee removed seven dead standing trees. These trees were located between the trail and field next to the Lime Kiln in Rattlesnake. A huge thanks to Gordon, Chuck, Jeff B, Keith, Bob & Max for their help with this large project.

July 13th - Larry, Gordon, and Jeff setup shop at the container to prepare enough composite decking for two 16' bridges. 64 pieces of 3' wide material were pre-drilled for field install.
June 29th - Jeff L & Gordon lead a hike across Bolton as part of the Freedom's Way Thoreau Walk to Wachuesetts. Included in this hike were several new local faces, members and co-founders of the Massachusetts Walking Tour, Tim Castner from Freedom's Way, Betsy, Larry, Jeff B, Winslow, and Rebecca. The walk started from Delaney at 8:30am and finished at Bolton Flats right around 2pm. Thanks to everyone for a great hike in Bolton.
June 24th - Following several months of planning, discussion, and coordination of materials the Sullivan Memorial at Vaughn Hills was renovated. Thank you to Daniel and David Ickes for their efforts in both the planning and installation of these renovations. Thank you to Jeff B, Larry, Gordon, and Charles for their help in the rain on a Saturday morning.
June 24th - Jeff clears two cross trail obstructions along the Harris Farm trail in Rattlesnake in preparation for the Thoreau Walk. Another trail obstruction on a secondary trail within the Bob Horton loop was also cleared.
June 23th - Rebecca, Jeff, Larry, Gordon & Betsy worked to clear several overgrown trails in Bowers Springs in preparation for Tom Denney Nature Camp and the Thoreau Walk. A culvert in the property was cleared of debris. The team surveyed two new bridge locations.
June 13th - Rebecca, Jeff, and Larry deployed the Conservation Commission "Brush Hog" into Wilder Pond. A new 150' long trail was cut to facilitate crossing Still River closer to RT117.
June 9th - Jeff, Gordon & Betsy worked to clear multiple trail obstructions in Rattlesnake between TH3 and the Phillips plaque. The plaque had become separated from the stone and a repair was required. Using a two-part epoxy and heavy duty construction adhesive, the team worked to clean and reinstall the plaque.
June 7th - Gordon & Betsy install "Crossing Private Property" signs at the Schartner link to Fyfeshire, the Schartner easement to Wallie, at Hapgood/Schecter access from Randall Road, and Hapgood/Schecter to West Berlin.
June 4th - The TC has partnered with Troop 1 Bolton Boy Scouts to help maintain our trail system. This weekend, the boys cleared the overgrown trail running from behind the Federated Church to the intersection with the Powderhouse/Town Common connector. This project is part of Robby Bond's Eagle Scout project which will create a seating area, for parishioners and the public, in the woods on church property. The BTC thanks Robby Bond, Nick Matte and Daniel Ickes and their fathers for their service! ----Greg Matte
June 3rd - Gordon, Jeff L, Jeff B, Steve & Ashley cleared a trail obstruction, an overhead leaning tree, and repaired a broken bridge section in Annie Moore conservation area.
May 13th - Gordon, Larry, Jeff L, Drew, Keith, and Scott work to finish the trail extension from Fyfeshire out to Peach Hill Road. The team spent three hours cutting, clearing, and marking this 10' easement along a beautiful stone wall. The new trail connects to the existing one at a four parcel intersection along the town line between Bolton and Berlin. This new 1/4 mile trail exists within an easement across Schnarter Farm's property in Berlin.
May 9th - Gordon, Betsy, Julianne, and Jeff installed the new trail loop extension in Annie Moore. It replaces the shorter secondary loop trail that ran parallel to the primary. This new route includes varying terrain that takes users through interesting rock formations and over a hilltop overlook area. Maps (PDF and KML) files this property are updated HERE.
May 7th - Gordon, Winslow, Jeff B, and Jeff L conducted trail clearing and maintenance at Vaughn Hills. This included multiple trail obstructions, overhead hazards, and trail side dead standing tree clearing. During this work, Daniel and his father David walked the property installing eight new custom directional signs for his Eagle Scout project. Photos HERE.
May 7th - Drew disassembled a messy fall down with a pack saw near TH2 in Rattlesnake. An alternate trail around the tree was starting to form, but the cleared obstruction will allow for the original trail intent to be maintained.
April 30th - A collaborative work party between the BTC and Trinity Church Bolton care of Tim Joyner took place at Fyfeshire. Twenty adults and children spent over three hours in property . Improvements included cleaning the stone entrance and entrance sign, picking up trash, trail clearing and widening, chainsaw work, replacing trail markers, installing directional signage, and repairing the bench. A pond side lunch was served. Thank you to everyone who helped!
April 29th - Jeff B and Jeff L install a dog bag station in Bowers Springs. The dispenser holds 400 bags and is located at the first main trail intersection from the parking area.
April 8th - Keith, Jeff B, and Jeff L hike five miles through Rattlesnake clearing multiple cross trail obstructions and side trail dead standing issues. Check out Keith's chainsaw backpack!
April 3rd - The trail into Zink from Corn Road required significant work performed by Jeff, Drew and Matt. One elevated cross trail fall down and a massive over trail hang up were cleared.
March 31st - A massive dead standing tree blocking trail access to Gould-White from Sawyer Road is processed by Gordon and Jeff. This was the largest diameter tree cleared to date.
March 31st - The trail segment near Randall Road had a bottleneck created by a large broken tree. This condition has existed for years, but was resolved by Jeff and Gordon.
March 31st - Gordon processes a cross trail blow down in Gould-White along the Basin Loop trail while Jeff stacks the cut sections neatly in the woods.
March 23rd - A clean up project at the primary parking area for Rattlesnake (TH1). Bob & Jeff clear a large broken branch and take down a dead standing ash tree using a block & tackle.
March 4th - The TC supported Winterfest 2017 with free hot cocoa and trail mix. The temperature was in the high teens under heavy wind. Hot cocoa was a popular item in these conditions, and 132 free cups were handed out to event participants in two hours. Thank you to Larry, Gordon & Besty, Drew, and Jeff B for making this first TC event table possible.
February 14th - Rebecca works on snowshoes to clear a cross trail fall down next to the kiosk at Bowers Springs. Photos and chainsaw work by Jeff.
January 29th - Bob Roemer clears a cross trail oak between junctions 2H & 2I in Rattlesnake.
